Sunday, July 31st - The Upper Park Road Mountain Bike Time Trial - 9:00AM:
We held this off-road Upper Park Road Time Trial a few weeks ago and it a lot of fun!!! So, figured we'd try it again. This off-road Time Trial will start & finish at the Upper Park Road gate - just before the Upper Park Road turns to gravel, right near Horseshoe Lake. The course travels on Upper Park Road until the end - then comes back the same way - just an out-and-back off-road Time Trial. The start will be at the top of the hill - you will descend down the paved section to the gravel, and ride all the way until the end of Upper Park Road(turn around before it turns to single-track at the end!).......then back all the way to the start. The course is about 8.2 miles in length(or so - will get better measurements on the course and profile on R.A.C.E. day), with about 550 feet of total climbing. Cyclocross bikes and mountain bikes can be used - and runners are also welcome to give it a shot if they wish! Registration will open at 8:30am at the gate - with the 1st rider taking off at 9:01am......and, as usual, we will go in 1-minute intervals for this 4ish miles out, 4ish miles back in, off-road Time Trial. Monday, August 1st - The Bidwell Forest Mountain Bike Short-Track Race - NEW EVENT - 6:30pm:
Last Monday night's short-track race had 25 riders come out and it was a blast!!! So, thought we would give it another go! This race will start on the north side of the 5-Mile Recreation Area - near the dirt parking lot. Registration will open at 6:15pm for the 6:30pm start. The course will run through the single-track trails in "The Forest" in Upper Bidwell Park. This is an area just north of the 5-Mile Area - in between the 5-Mile and the entry to the North Rim Trail Parking Area. The course is VERY shaded and cool - great for summer racing - and is about 1.1 miles in length per lap......and is almost all single-track. The race will start and finish near the dirt parking area on the north end of 5-Mile, will be 40 minutes PLUS 2 laps. And, again, the course is about 1.1 miles in length, very shaded, and is ALL FLAT - no hills. The Course will be marked with flour arrows. We will race the course for 40 minutes, at which point I will give you the 2 laps to go sign. GREAT for beginners and Juniors - or those just wanting to get out on your mountain bikes for a spin! Can definitely use a cyclocross bike(Scott Heather won the race the 1st week on a cyclocross bike) - or even a road bike if you wanted - but is a mountain bike race. I will bring out ice water, as usual. For an approximate map of the course, please visit the MapMyRide link at:

The races will go for 35 minutes at first......then, after that point, the rider who crosses the start/finish line LAST each lap will be pulled from the race. Once we are down to 2 riders left per Category, there will be 1 lap to go - and the race will be on. This is a tricky race - you MUST know where you are at all times once we reach the 35-minute mark - KNOW whether or not you are in last place coming across the line......the Devil has a tendency to take the unsuspecting in these races!! If I call you OUT, you must pull out of the race.
The Category C and Juniors Race will go for 20 Minutes PLUS 3 laps. Riders must sign in and wear a helmet in order to compete. Prime Points will count towards the 2011 Chico Airport Criterium Series!
RAIN OR WET PAVEMENT WILL ALWAYS CANCEL THIS EVENT!
Helmets are mandatory!
(DOUBLE POINT EVENT in the 2011 Chico Airport Criterium Series!)

Saturday, July 23rd - The BLOOM Circuit Race - 9:00AM:
YES, it's back! We first used this course back in August of 2009, and it was a doozy! ;) This event is named after our very own Mark Bloom - Mark told me about this Circuit Course in 2009 and thought it might make a good R.A.C.E. Event - and man, he wasn't kidding!! This course has a little bit of everything - and it is quite beautiful too!! This Circuit Race will be 5 laps of a 5.1 mile long circuit off of Hwy. 70........for a total of 25.5 miles. However, the total elevation gain for this event will be approximately 4,600 feet.......that's more than double the Table Mountain Road Race climbing in the same distance. So......bring your climbing legs and climbing gears! There is a parking area at the Vista spot right on the course on Hwy. 70 - right at the Intersection with Lunt Road. Registration will open in the Vista Area at 8:30am.........with the Category "A" event starting at 9:00AM.........and the Category "B" event starting at 9:02AM. Women's Category & Masters Categories will be scored separately, but starting with the Bs. The race starts with a descent off of Hwy. 70, down Lunt Road - over to Nelson Bar Road - to Concow Road - and back to Hwy. 70. Each lap includes 920 feet of total climbing - with some good pitches in there for good measure! This is also a 50-point Event for the 2011 Butte Road R.A.C.E. Series. The course is very diverse - and quite fun and scenic - but has a bit of climbing to it!
***One Note - The descent down Lunt Road is quite steep - make sure that your bicycle is in good working order, and that your brakes work! Again, most USA Cycling rules apply to these races - you know, WEAR YOUR HELMET, don't ride like a nutcase, be safe, and all that good stuff. Water bottle hand-ups will be SOLELY dependent upon volunteers - so, if ya have a volunteer, bring 'em out!! I will bring "some" water out, but not a ton. A mention about Tri Bars - You can have Tri Bars on your bicycle - BUT, you must NOT use them if you are in a pack or paceline! Normally, in a USA Cycling mass-start race, you would not be allowed to have them on your bicycle - but I know many of us like them on our bicycles and use them for training/triathlons/TTs. This isn't the World Championships - we do these Circuit Races for fun, fitness and practice - but please do NOT use your Tri Bars in a pack/paceline situation. Thanks!! Sunday, July 24th - The Field of Dreams 12.6 Mile Time Trial - 9:00AM:
A newer rolling course Time Trial! Registration will open at 8:30am at Spring Valley School on Pentz Road - the first rider will go off at 9:01am......and we will go in 1-Minute Intervals. This Time Trial is approximately 12.6 miles in length and includes some rolling terrain - for a total elevation gain of about 680 feet. The course itself is just one big loop - 1 lap for everyone. So, you'll have a chance to experience wind direction from a variety of locations!! The Start/Finish is at Spring Valley School(the Lunch Stop of the Wildflower Century) on Pentz Road - you'll go to Hwy. 70 to Clark Road, take Clark Road to Durham Pentz Road, then Durham Pentz back to Pentz Road to the finish at the school.......all right-hand turns. The course will be marked with Route Arrows. A map of this course can be found here:

Monday, July 25th - The Bidwell Forest Mountain Bike Short-Track Race - NEW EVENT - 6:30pm:
We did this race for the first time last Monday night and it was a blast!!! So, thought we would give it another go! This race will start on the north side of the 5-Mile Recreation Area - near the dirt parking lot. Registration will open at 6:15pm for the 6:30pm start. The course will run through the single-track in "The Forest" in Upper Bidwell Park. This is an area just north of the 5-Mile Area - in between the 5-Mile and the entry to the North Rim Trail Parking Area. The course is VERY shaded and cool - great for summer racing - and is about 1.25 miles in length per lap......and is almost all single-track. The race will start and finish near the dirt parking area on the north end of 5-Mile, will be 40 minutes PLUS 2 laps. And, again, the course is just 1.25 miles in length, very shaded, and is ALL FLAT - no hills. We will race the course for 40 minutes, at which point I will give you the 2 laps to go sign. GREAT for beginners and Juniors - or those just wanting to get out on your mountain bikes for a spin! Can definitely use a cyclocross bike(Scott Heather won the race last week on a cyclocross bike) - or even a road bike if you wanted - but is a mountain bike race. Saturday, July 16th - The Table Mountain Road Race - 9:00AM:
The Table Mountain Road Race is back for the month of July! This particular course was first used by the Chico Velo Cycling Club as a United States Cycling Federation Road Race course back in 1984 during the Chico Omnium(which also included the 7-Mile Lane Time Trial and the Chico Downtown Criterium that year). Most groups did 2 laps of this course, but the Cat.1/2 guys did 3 or 4. However, I wouldn't do that to ya - we're only going to do 1 lap in this race - for a total of approximately 25 miles and approximately 2,100 feet of total climbing. The course preview is located on Bikely.com here - and you can see the Course Profile by clicking on "Show" in the top left-hand corner........then clicking on "Elevation Profile":
http://www.bikely.com/maps/bike-path/Old-Table-Mountain-Road-Race-Course
The Start/Finish Line is located on Table Mountain Boulevard right by Table Mountain Ranch Road(see Bikely Map - this was the Start/Finish Line for the 1984 race as well - I'll be out there early, so look for the registration table). Each Category will do just 1 lap = 25 miles. Registration will open at 8:30AM with Category A going off at 9:00AM........and Category B, Category C, Juniors Category going at 9:02AM. Women's, Masters, C & Juniors Categories will start with Category "B", but will be scored separately. Parking is available on the unfinished freeway overpass at the Start/Finish Line.
***Now,
a word of warning about this Road Race - This course goes in a clockwise direction - meaning that you will be climbing up to Cherokee from Hwy. 70. Although the hill does not seem quite as difficult as from the other side(the Wildflower Century side), the descent off Table Mountain will be quite tricky. Make certain that your bicycle is in good working order and that you are comfortable on technical descents. The Road Race course goes through amazingly diverse sections and is quite scenic - but please look out for one another and for yourselves, especially on the descent and on the Highway. All USA Cycling rules apply, as usual - you know, don't do stupid stuff, wear a helmet, obey the centerline, etc. Route Arrows will mark the course as well. Bottle hand ups and Feed Zones will be solely dependent upon volunteers - Feed Zone is pretty much anywhere on the course. Sag vehicles will be solely dependent upon volunteers as well. I will be sweeping the course at the end as well - so if I don't see you back at the Finish, I'm coming to get you!
HELD RAIN OR SHINE!
Helmets are mandatory!
(40-point event in the 2011 Butte Road R.A.C.E. Series!)

Saturday, July 16th - The "Kids ONLY" Humboldt Road Race - 1:00PM:

From the bottom of the climb up to the main Power Lines (it's about half-way up Humboldt = 2 miles up, 400 feet of total climbing!) - For the kids under the Age of 16 who have been showing up to the Chico Airport Criteriums - now's your chance to experience a ROAD RACE!! Well.....at least a little one!! Registration will open at the bottom of the hill (near the intersection of Humboldt Road & Stilson Canyon Road) at 12:40pm. The RACE will start at 1:00pm. This one is 2 miles long and climbs approximately 400 feet - so bring your climbing legs!! I will have water at the Start & Finish. We're going just up to the Power Lines - not all the way up to the top. MENTORS are STRONGLY encouraged to attend - to keep an eye on our riders, help them out and encourage them up the hill. I will also be there with the SAG Vehicle, if needed.
***One Note - If enough older kids show, we may do a race up to the top of Humboldt too, depending upon help & logistics. For a map of the "Kids Only" course, please visit:

Sunday, July 17th - The " Bidwell Bump " Practice Race - 9:00am:

***Now, a word of warning about this Road Race - This course goes in a clockwise direction - meaning that you will be climbing up to Cherokee from Hwy.

Well.....at least a little one!! Registration will open at the bottom of the hill (near the intersection of Humboldt Road & Stilson Canyon Road) at 12:40pm. The RACE will start at 1:00pm. This one is 2 miles long and climbs approximately 400 feet - so bring your climbing legs!! I will have water at the Start & Finish. I will also be there with the SAG Vehicle, if needed.
***One Note - If enough older kids show, we may do a race up to the top of Humboldt too, depending upon help & logistics. For a map of the "Kids Only" course, please visit:
